Chapter 2 - Final Year Project - Progression - 12/08/22

Writer's picture: Kristian HammondKristian Hammond

New blog so soon?! Yeah, I was going to do a new blog on Monday and that would have been 2 weeks today, but I'm going away from 15/08/22 to 21/08/22 so don't expect any new blog anytime soon after this.

So Kristian, what have you been working on then? What did you get for us? Well let me give you a short list that I have done:

  • Added sound effects for the characters when the hit collider interacts or when the characters are out of the stage zone.

  • Added particles effects when the characters get attacked.

  • Designing my first stage including the addition of a music background.

I won't reveal the music background or the sound effect yet but I will talk about the particle effects and the first stage.

The First Stage's Level Design

Recently I did a survey on my course's discord server to decide on the stage-level designs in the game. I would like to say thanks to the 6 people that have done the survey and helped me to decide of what theme I should do. The theme was either nature, town, dungeons, park, snowy, beach, desert, dark forest, or heaven. Out of all of them, I would like to say that dark forest had the most votes. Well done to the dark forest. However, there are 4 other stages that have tied on second and I'm only going to pick 2 out of the 4 since in the project and I'm not going to reveal them yet so stay tuned for that.

Now let's actually talk about the stage itself. Here's a screenshot of the stage (and it's not the final version):

As you can see from the screenshot, I wanted the stage to feel like a dark forest so I gave the stage a night theme by turning the skybox into black by rotating the directional light. Also, I placed a bunch of trees on both sides. Yeah, I also placed trees on the front side so the stage doesn't feel too empty. That reason does go the same for the little grasses and the stumps however that's not the only reason but to give the stage a little more details overall. Also, you can notice that I gave the stage a fog effect to express the atmosphere of the stage overall. Feel free the leave any feedback in the comment sections like should I adjust the density level of the fog or should I fix the directional light by making it less bright? Any feedback would be great.

Particle effects

Here's a screenshot of the particle effect:

As you can see from the screenshot, when a character hits another character, it creates this particle effect. The way I would describe it, it is more like a trigger impact type of effect with a mix of colours like yellow and orange. But Kristian, why not red?! Well... to me that won't be appropriate since this is such to be PG 12 or up. Also, I gave the particles effect some trail lines to more the effect more like a cartoony effect (if that makes any sense). But feel free to leave any feedback in the comments sections.

One last thing to mention, I would like to say think Trello and Gitlab for keeping me on track so far for this project. Stay tuned for more blogs for this project.
